Might not have seen his best form wearing an England shirt, but in addition to his solo wonder goal in Brazil, scored from a cracking free kick vs Netherlands in '93.

No British football player in the Prem or old 1st division has ever given me more pleasure football wise than John Barnes he looked balletic and silky in a way no other player apart from the great Brazilians used to. Barnes put up with a lot of shit from our fans too but time and time again beat the shit out of the racists of all his opponents but without touching them but sending them home with bruised hearts by using his brilliance on the pitch, and well done to him for that.

Was told he shagged a 17 year girl I knew for years in hotels around the country - mind you she wasn't too fussy

I was a student in Liverpool, for my sins, and recall being in a naff off licence getting some beer on the day that Greame Souness was sacked as Liverpool manager.
Ahead of me and a friend in the queue was this man wearing the most gawdy-but-expensive purple three quarter length woolen coat. He was ordering several bottles of champagne - which in an offy like this was unheard of.
My mate turned to me and said: "Fuck me, somebody's had a good day..."
At which point, a purple clad John Barnes turned around and said: "Well, when you're celebrating, you're celebrating."
He beamed a huge John Barnes smile and left the offy to toast Souey's departure.
Everybody I know on Merseyside, even the Toffees, said he was a thoroughly decent man who spared the time to chat to fans.
He beat racism by being a normal and thoughtful man, despite his god-like status across at least half of the city.

dirty fucker slipped his phone number in my sisters hand bag when I took her to Liverpool West Ham in the corporate lounge when he was clearly married.
She don't do the brothers though...
We drew 0-0 and there was a horrendous traffic jam on the way up and a lost of West Ham didn't get there until half time.
I think that was the last time we got a result there.

His record at Celtic was poor as he decided to utilise a 4-2-2-2 formation. Perhaps unsurprisingly, It left them a bit exposed on the wings.
He was in charge when the Sun came up with "Super Caley go ballistic, Celtic are atrocious".

I watched about 20 seconds of this programme and he seemed to be doing a Sol Campbell prattling on about black managers. AGAIN!

I'm sorry, I seems that previous I had been under the misapprehension that this is a public forum specifically intended for the conveyance of individual opinion. Sincerest apologies, oh great one.

All classes have racists Branded, even your own wannabe middle class. Barnes was exciting to watch but sometimes I think he didn't have a clue where he was going with the ball, great skill and balance but no football brain.

Sort of bloke it's probably almost impossible to dislike.
Fantastic footballer and as disgraceful as it is, I even applauded him against us on occasion because of some of the skills. Then again I even applauded a Fowler goal at our gaff once, so my head was clearly all wrong back then!
As for the racism, something I've never really understood when about colour and always cringe when I hear it thrown around.

I remember being young and seeing the banana's on the pitch and thinking the staff were throwing them on for the players to get their energy levels up.
Everytime I saw a black player throw one away I'd think "meh must not be hungry"...
Fuck I was dumb.

Daft thing was they showed him snapping his achilles V Finland and I dont remember that at all?? I know I joke (sometimes) about football being sooooooo much better in the old days but one thing that is forever better in the game is the lack of racist chants.... some of the footage (including at our place) was fucking horrific... we have come a long long way

When football used to be good.
He was fucking terrifying on his day - absolute beast and easily the best player in that league in around the end of the 80's.
His head amuses me no end too. It's fucking HUGE.
It's like Volley's derby.
